From gwoka at age 3 to production in Paris
Terry Baptiste is born in Guadeloupe to a Guadeloupean father and a Guyanese mother. At 3, his uncle Thierry Cham introduces him to gwoka, ten years of traditional percussion that forge the rhythmic ear before the voice. He truly discovers Bouyon in high school, drawn to the Dominican scene. Triple Kay, WCK, All Star Band, more than to the Guadeloupe one. As an adult he moves to France for a production school, then teaches himself keyboard on YouTube. His father is a DJ: it's from listening to him spin on Sundays, on RnB like Nelly and Aaliyah, that he catches the musical ear. For a long time he plays keys live without singing, always placed on the side of the stage, that's what pushes him to put out his own voice. That path fixes a triple profile, gwoka percussionist, keyboard player, producer, which structures everything after. As early as 2021 he sets down a public trace with "1T1-bouyon warm up akiyo", a first marker in the Warm Up vocabulary that will become a New Bouyon Wave signature. In 2023, "Mi Bouyon" with Drexi and "Sa dou" with Miky Ding La and Shanika write him into the Guadeloupe mesh. In 2024, "Feel Da (rvf)" and "Bay Li" with LeJuh, then "Leave Me Alone" with Binksdrick, Dinho, LeJuh and Theomaa, keep thickening the catalogue. In 2025, his single "Bouwéy" with Theomaa goes gold-certified, passes 18 million YouTube views and lands a 2026 Flammes Awards nomination in the Caribbean category, a milestone that sets him up as one of the movement's commercial engines.
Before the New Bouyon Wave: the founding One Riddim projects
Three projects. Four tracks each. One format inherited from Caribbean dancehall: the riddim, a single instrumental on which several artists lay their voice. Before the New Bouyon Wave carried its name in September 2023, 1T1 had already built his network around exactly that. He says it in his December 2024 Loxymore interview: Genesis's Lyrikal Terrorist inspired him to gather the Bouyon Gwada voices around shared productions.
The point is that these three projects are not random collections. Each has its own logic. "Keneth Riddim" and "Zézé Riddim" bring together the voices already singing (Aknose, Softee, TIITII NBA) and the ones he puts on record for the first time (Theomaa, Nils, Le Juh). "TROICROI RIDDIM" extends the format to Theomaa and RvF in 2024. And "Mas La Rivé" the same year stretches the logic to nine artists on the credits (1T1, Theomaa, Aknose, DJ Softee, DJ TKrys, Bismok, Jicypie, DJ Kylled, LeJuh).
Without those three projects, the September 2023 single "New Bouyon Wave #1" would have stood on nothing. That pre-2023 collective routine is what made the name we know today possible.
Voice-producer of the New Bouyon Wave, from single to beat
In September 2023, "New Bouyon Wave #1", carried by TIITII NBA, Nils, DJ Softee, Aknose and Theomaa, officially names the movement, that collective of eight voices: 1T1, TIITII NBA, Softee, Aknose, Nils, Lucky lukee, Le Juh and Theomaa. 1T1 is not credited on that single, but he builds the beats for a large part of the wave. For Theomaa on "Bouwéy", "Ouba", "Viniw" and "Baddest". For Aknose and Le Juh across several releases. For Mr Ridge on "Do Baby" and "She Stupid" in 2025, two singles bridging the Dominican and Guadeloupean scenes directly. The CHORD album drops in December 2024. In 2023, "No Sex Over Money" with TIITII NBA, "Bidiba Bidibou" with Aknose and Softee, and "Gardavou" with Lucky lukee and DJ Softee thicken the mesh. In 2025, "Pran On Pyé" with LeJuh, Qwann and YSN, and "FREESTYLE TRINI 2" with Aknose, DJ Softee and Nils extend the collective drive. "Bubble" with Le Jèm'ss and Ti Couby, then "Move" in 2026 with Aknose, LeJuh, Qwann, Theomaa and YSN, show a network that keeps widening without diluting.
International mainstream and the Gwada–Dominica circulation
In May 2025, his appearance on Couleurs Tropicales registers him as composer, producer and singer, three roles he carries without favouring one. He ranks among the most-streamed Bouyon artists in the world, alongside MiiMii KDS, Mr Ridge and HollyG. His artistic direction holds in one sentence he repeats: "elevate the genre by shifting its codes". Refined aesthetics, less explicit lyrics, he is the one pushing the New Bouyon Wave toward the mainstream without betraying where it comes from. He also sings mostly in English, a deliberate choice ("the flow glides in English"), in line with the genre's English-speaking Dominican source and the diaspora, and keeps a tight release pace, around four releases a month. In January 2026, "In Di Corner" with MiiMii KDS extends the international circulation of the Guadeloupean sound.
