What this ranking does not say

A listener count measures distribution as much as music. On this island, the gap is brutal.

WCK founded bouyon in 1988 and sits near the bottom of the table. The group weighs forty times less than the leader. That is not a verdict on their importance, it is what happens when a 1988-2000 catalog never gets carried properly onto the platforms.

Suppa appears nowhere. The founder of Gaza Crew, who died in 2013, belonged to the SoundCloud era. No streaming service carries his work. A pillar of the genre's history, impossible to rank.

Five bands out of six are missing. All Star, Cross Vibes, Effects, Explosive, Legacy: no page at all. The Dominican scene was built on bands, on stage, at Carnival and at the World Creole Music Festival. Streaming does not see that half.

So read this ranking for what it is: a photograph of what plays online this month, not the hierarchy of Dominican bouyon.

How to read this ranking

The number is the monthly listener count shown on each artist's Spotify page: how many different people played them over the last 28 days.

Two caveats. First, this ranks artists, not tracks. Second, several Dominican artists have their catalog split across multiple Spotify pages, created automatically at each release: their real audience is higher than any single page shows. Where that happens, the main page is the one used here.

From Roseau to Les Abymes

Bouyon crossed the channel. What started in Dominica in 1988 is now also written in Guadeloupe, with its own voices. TIITII NBA is one of the eight of the New Bouyon Wave: the current release puts you in the present tense of the genre, on both sides of the water.

FAQ : common questions

Who is the most streamed bouyon artist in Dominica? At the latest count, Mr Ridge leads Dominican bouyon artists by Spotify monthly listeners, ahead of Pudaz and Little Boy. The ranking is rebuilt every month.

Where was bouyon born? In Roseau, Dominica, in 1988, with the group WCK (Windward Caribbean Kulture). The island remains the historic home of the genre, now carried on in Guadeloupe and Saint Martin too.

Why is WCK so low in the ranking? Because the ranking measures Spotify monthly listeners, meaning today's online listening. WCK's historic catalog, recorded from 1988 on, was never properly carried onto the streaming platforms.
