Asa Bantan

Asa Bantan is the first solo figure of modern bouyon, the run that invents the role of the individual bouyon artist after the era of bands (WCK, Triple Kay). Before him, bouyon lives mostly through carnival bands; after him, a career under one's own name becomes possible, with a stage moniker, an identifiable catalogue and an audience that follows the artist rather than the outfit. The trilogy "One Man" (2011), "Bouyon Boss" (2012) and "Wet Fete" (April 2013) acts as a manifesto: three hits in three years that install a figure able to go full power solo on the stages of Mas Domnik, the World Creole Music Festival and bouyon nights across the Caribbean.

His run is also that of a Dominica → Guadeloupe connector. When Suppa is killed in Guadeloupe in 2013, he inherits by default the role of link between the genre's mother island and the Act II Gwada scene then being built (Yellow Gaza, Gaza Crew, DJ Joe, Vador). The collaboration "Bwé rhum" with DJ Joe in 2023 documents that connection publicly. DJ Joe having moved between Guadeloupe and Paris as early as 2012. And the following year, on "Shake Ya x Shake It" with Triple Kay International, he reconnects with the band matrix of Dominican bouyon. Two collaborations that show it in black and white: Asa Bantan is the link between the two islands.

The seal comes in 2024. At the Caribbean Music Awards, he wins the People's Choice Award , against Kes, Patrice Roberts, Skinny Fabulous, Shenseea and Yung Bredda. Five competitors all filed under pan-Caribbean soca or dancehall, and the 100 % bouyon artist is the one who wins. The weight of that result is historic: it is the first time a bouyon artist, with no soca crossover, no global collab, takes a mainstream pan-Caribbean category. DBS Radio documents the win. His regular appearances at the World Creole Music Festival and his booking at Big Bad Bouyon Miami 2025 close the loop between historic Dominican bouyon and the North American festival institution.

Institutionally, his appointment as "Goodwill Ambassador" of Dominica in 2020 echoes that of Carlyn XP as "Bouyon Queen". The Dominican state officially recognises two bouyon figures, a man and a woman, as cultural representatives. It is the first time a genre long seen as "trash", to the point of being pushed off the airwaves during the 2009 "blackout" in Guadeloupe recounted by Aknose, reaches official representation of the island.
