On Monday, October 12, Dominica brings out its flag. It is Flag Day. From homes to schools, from businesses to cars, the call is the same across the island: raise it, wear it, celebrate it.
At the centre, a red disc carries the sisserou, the country's emblem parrot, standing on a twig. Ten lime green stars surround it, one per parish, all of equal rank. A yellow, black and white cross runs across a forest green background. Yellow stands for the sunshine and the island's first inhabitants, black for the soil and the African heritage, white for the clarity of the rivers. The design is by Alwin Bully.
Flag Day opens National Emblems Week, running until Friday the 16th, the day of Jounen Panyen. This is the 48th Independence season, under the theme "Our Journey, Our Legacy, Our Future". What follows builds up: the World Creole Music Festival from October 23 to 25, with Ridge, Asa Bantan, Trilla G, Reo, Shelly and the Signal Band on the bill, Jounen Kwéyòl on the 30th, then the national day on November 3.
