Mr Gwada is Kernel Stevens. He is born in Dominica and raised by his grandparents in Layou, a small fishing village. Around 19, he leaves the island to join his father in Guadeloupe, and his music takes on a French and Creole colour from there. He starts in dancehall under the name Olbenz, then moves to bouyon soca. Not to be confused with Gwada G, another Dominican artist.
The nickname starts as a joke on the streets of Guadeloupe. It becomes official with "GWADA (Everybody wan Go)", written by Kernel Stevens and produced by DJ Flip on Clynton Philipp's 365 Riddim. The video, directed by Josa, goes online on January 5, 2013. The song tells of his life in Guadeloupe and the "Gwada" culture.
He follows up with "SAW KIM", produced by Dada, then with "Come Join Me" (Daydream Riddim) in 2017, also produced by Dada.
In April 2021, he goes live on Love Bouyon TV. He tells his story there and presents himself as a versatile artist who also loves Afro music. On the release side, the pace holds: in 2023, "Lickle Finger" on DJ Taffy's Funny Riddim and "That's D Biznis", which is about the Nasty Business wave.
In 2024, "Se Pa Taw" with DJ Taffy. In 2025, "Big Chain" with Bobo Bantan, one of the titles he puts forward on his Instagram, and the album "LEGEND (BOUYON BLACKSHEEP)".
2026 opens with "Deja Koke", released January 4 with Kassidjé, on a J2mo riddim, recorded at Federation Family Studio. "La Fami" with NattyBill follows in January, "After Party" (Mr Gwada x J2mo) in April, then "My Stories (In My Dm)" on May 4.
