Major Lazer

Major Lazer has been, since 2008, one of the main bridges between Caribbean music and mainstream global EDM. The trio formed by Diplo, Walshy Fire and Ape Drums on the Mad Decent label imported Caribbean riddims into the global charts, notably through "Lean On" (2015) with MØ and DJ Snake, and long worked as an airlock between Jamaica, Trinidad and mainstream platforms. The project is not a core Bouyon actor, neither musicologically nor locally, but its profile is necessary to the writing of Chapter IX, because it marks the entry of the word Bouyon into mainstream EDM nomenclature.

The pivotal episode is the "G.O.A.T. Bouyon Mixes" series, released between 2022 and 2025 in collaboration with Bunji Garlin (Trinidad) and America Foster. The Caribbean press documents the release under the explicit headline "Bouyon-powered anthem G.O.A.T." and archives the tracklist detail. For the first time, a global EDM label claims the word Bouyon in the title of one of its official releases, in place of the more generic labels ("Caribbean", "tropical", "dancehall") it had used until then. It is that naming claim which establishes the episode as the most visible mainstream EDM validation of Bouyon to date.

What the episode is and is not both need naming. What it is: a passage through which Bouyon crosses the Mad Decent ecosystem, reaches international EDM radio and gains platform referencing. What it is not: a shift of Bouyon's centre of gravity towards the United States or the United Kingdom. The rhythmic manufacture of Bouyon stays anchored in Dominica (WCK Band, Asa Banton, Triple Kay, Mr Ridge, A Plus Musik) and its contemporary development is also written in Guadeloupe with the New Bouyon Wave carried by 1T1, TIITII NBA, Aknose, Softee and Theomaa. Major Lazer, in that mapping, plays the role of an amplifier: it distributes, it validates, it references, but it does not manufacture the core of the genre.

That distinction is essential to avoid repeating the historic error of soca globalisation (where the Trinidad industry long carried the credit, sometimes at Dominica's expense). Major Lazer belongs to amplification, not to origin, hence the link to the producers chapter ("Producteurs et Passeurs"): Diplo, Walshy Fire and Ape Drums belong to the category of cross-genre carriers, not to the core genealogy of the genre. Their role in the worldwide Bouyon story is that of a distribution stage, and the episode counts among the pivot points of the hinge years 2022-2025.
