Bouyon-muffin

Bouyon variant with a dancehall-ragga vocal color, opened by Skinny Banton (Shadowflow) in 1995 in the WCK matrix.

Definition

Bouyon-muffin is a Bouyon variant born in 1995 in the WCK matrix, formalized through the collaboration between the band and Skinny Banton (Shadowflow). It is one of the two main directions taken by Bouyon in the 1990s, alongside a more instrumental, band-oriented Bouyon.

The reference BPM sits within a 110-135 BPM window, more moderate than the modern hardcore Bouyon norm (155-164 BPM). That breathing space leaves room for the singing.

Difference with classic Bouyon

Classic Bouyon is built around an instrumental machinery held by the TR-505 and keyboards. Bouyon-muffin keeps that base but grafts a vocal color inherited from Jamaican ragga toasting and dancehall. The voice takes the lead: it steers the track, carries the signature, decides where Bouyon goes.

It is a stylistic fusion, not a sub-tempo. Bouyon-muffin does not invent a new rhythm — it lays a new kind of singing on top of the existing rhythm. Within the Bouyon map, it must be distinguished from the Nasty Business developed by Mr Ridge starting in 2022: the two approaches run in parallel, with no direct continuation.

Lineage

Bouyon-muffin opens the door to a rougher sub-current, raasuka, which Skinny Banton develops from 1995 in the same time window. The pivotal compilation of the line, Best of Skinny Banton "Bouyon Muffin" (2010, 22 tracks), remains the discographic reference for hearing the sub-genre as it was defined.

In the 2020+ globalization wave, bouyon-muffin remains an archaeological reference: few emerging artists claim it as their main genre, but its vocal grammar circulates inside the new wave.
