On Friday, October 23, the first night of the World Creole Music Festival is in full swing at Windsor Park in Roseau. At 3 am, the slot goes to TK International, between Capleton and Skillibeng.
On Saturday, in the middle of the festival, Benji, one of the band's vocalists, claims a place of its own. For Benji, TK International laid down the sound of new-age bouyon. There were even talks, Benji says, about making it a genre of its own, with its own name: "Sewo Music".
The word does not come out of nowhere. In 2004, Benji returns to TK International as a guest and produces the title track of the album "Sewo". The following year, Benji becomes a full member. The band makes its WCMF debut in 2002 and, since 2005, has not missed a single edition. It says it wants to keep carrying "Bouyon, Good Vibes and Sewo" to the whole world.
In Dominica, sewo means party. The word has already served as a musical label: in 2016, DJ Flip Tha Boss presents "Sewo Music" as a style blending several genres, on the DJ's third album. Bouyon, for its part, keeps its name.
