On Friday, October 30, at 10 am, the national Creole dress parade sets off from Government Headquarters in Roseau. Dominica celebrates its Jounen Kwéyòl, and the organisers invite everyone to come in their finest Creole wear.
The day comes two days after the Madam Wob Dwiyet pageant. On Wednesday night, at the Massacre Indoor Facility, Hazel-Ann Anthony of Mahaut wins against six other contestants. The competition covers talent, contemporary Creole wear and the traditional wob dwiyet.
October is Patriotism and Heritage Month. The Had Kwéyòl Fridays already invite the island to wear national dress on October 2, 9, 16 and 23. For Culture Minister Greta Roberts, Independence is a time "to celebrate who we are".
What follows fits into five days: Cultural Extravaganza and Eat Fish Day on Saturday the 31st, a cultural gala at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday, November 1, National Day on Tuesday the 3rd, and the National Day of Community Service on Wednesday the 4th. It is the island's 48th Independence, under the theme "Our Journey, Our Legacy, Our Future".
