Roseau Carnival

Annual carnival of the Dominican capital, held every February — central stage of Bouyon between 2000 and 2010, arena of inter-band competition.

Definition

The Roseau Carnival (capital of Dominica) is the musical event that structures the Bouyon year since the birth of the genre. Held every February, it gathers nearly the entire Dominican population and the diaspora traveling specifically for it. For chap III (2000-2010), it is the arena of Bouyon: the place where modern bands — Triple Kay International first — clash in an annual competition logic.

The Roseau carnival ecosystem combines several elements: - Truck-mounted sound systems — bands perform on mobile platforms that move through downtown streets. - Inter-band competitions — juries and audience together designate the year's best performances. - Setlists built for the crowd — choruses chanted collectively, simpler structures than studio.

The chap III arena

Across the 2000-2010 decade, the Roseau Carnival is dominated by Triple Kay International, who imposes a stage standard there (XL lineup, division of roles, repertoire tailored for live). Other bands active in the arena during that period — Effects Band, All Star Band, Cross Vibes Band, Ignition Band, Explosive Band, Legacy Band — compete in it, without ever displacing Triple Kay from first place in public memory.

In 2010, Triple Kay's 10th anniversary coincides with a public event that marks the end of pure dominance (band leader resignation documented by Dominica News Online). The carnival then seeks something other than a band — it awaits a solo voice. That is the cue for Asa Banton's arrival in 2011, treated in chap XII.
